Background
Seven was born Annika Hansen in 2350 on the Tendara colony. Her parents Magnus and Erin were exobiologists, and when Annika was four, they embarked with her on an expedition to search out and study the rumored Borg. After encountering a Borg cube, they managed to elude its sensors for some time and collect vast amounts of data. They even followed it through a transwarp conduit into the Delta Quadrant. But eventually an ion storm disrupted their shields and the Borg found them. Annika, age six, and her parents were all assimilated.
Annika spent time in a Borg maturation chamber, where her neural pathways were reordered, her growth accelerated, and her cybernetic implants installed. As a mature drone, she was given the designation Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 01.
In 2368, Seven of Nine crash-landed on a planet along with several other members of her unimatrix. The others, having been assimilated as adults, began to reassert their individuality once severed from the Collective. Seven, however, had only the memories of a frightened child and feared losing the voices of the Collective. She forced the other three surviving drones into a make-shift link and had them reassemble the beacon to guide the Borg to their position. She erased most memories of the incident and they were reassimilated.
Seven had spent 18 years as a drone when she encountered Voyager in 2374. The Borg were in the midst of a conflict with species 8472, which they had unsuccessfully attempted to assimilate. In fact, species 8472 was decimating the Borg. Voyager, needing to pass through Borg space on its way home, was able to secure a temporarily alliance with the Borg by offering to help create a weapon against species 8472. Seven of Nine was selected to be the voice of the Borg in their dealings with Captain Janeway.
Not long into the alliance, they were attacked by species 8472. The Borg cube sacrificed itself to preserve Voyager and its technology, and Seven's section of the cube was beamed aboard Voyager's cargo bay to continue the work. Janeway had been incapacitated during the attack, however, leaving Chakotay in charge of the ship. When he denied Seven's demands to rendezvous with the nearest Borg cube, the Borg attempted to commandeer the ship. Chakotay depressurized the cargo bay, blowing all the drones but Seven out into space. She remained and forced Voyager into fluidic space, where they would have to use the new weapon to defend themselves from species 8472. The conflict put species 8472 into retreat all across the quadrant, and the Borg subsequently ended their alliance with Voyager. Seven attempted to commandeer the ship again, but the crew anticipated her actions and severed her link to the Collective.
Seven was initially furious about her separation from the Collective and demanded to be returned. However, Janeway insisted that until she was an individual capable of making a decision on her own, she would make decisions for her, and refused her the right to return. Seven still made the attempt to contact the Collective, but eventually she accepted her transition to humanity. The Doctor was able to remove most of her Borg implants, though some were tied into her vital functions and had to be left in tact. She also still requires periods of regeneration in a Borg alcove.
Since being severed from the Borg Collective, Seven has spent more than two years on Voyager, and has come to value her individuality. She considers Voyager to be her new Collective, and would sacrifice herself to protect it. But, she still has a ways to go before becoming a fully-developed human being.
